The calm of a Brooklyn film set was shattered Friday evening as police were called to the vicinity of Avenue N and McDonald Avenue, where Miami Vice ’85 was actively filming. According to reports from Deadline, 23-year-old Alex Perez of Brooklyn was taken into custody around 11:15 PM following an altercation.
A member of the production team informed authorities that Perez brandished a butcher knife after a verbal dispute, a move that reportedly caused the crew member to fear for their safety. Law enforcement swiftly responded, arresting Perez on site. The weapon was recovered, and thankfully, no injuries were reported during the incident. Perez now faces charges of menacing and criminal possession of a weapon.
The dramatic interruption comes as Miami Vice ’85 is in the early stages of production, with filming currently underway across various locations in New Jersey and New York City. The film is a high-profile reboot of the iconic 1980s NBC series, with significant buzz building around its cast and creative team.
Joseph Kosinski, known for his work on Top Gun: Maverick, is at the helm, directing from a script penned by Dan Gilroy and Eric Warren Singer. The movie boasts an impressive ensemble, featuring Michael B. Jordan as the charismatic Ricardo Tubbs and Austin Butler stepping into the shoes of the legendary Sonny Crockett. Other notable cast members include Alden Ehrenreich, Whitney Peak, Camila Morrone, Danny Ramirez, John Leguizamo, Andrew Schulz, Walton Goggins, André Holland, Michael Irby, and Haley Lu Richardson.
Universal greenlit the reboot last year, aiming to bring a fresh take on the classic Miami crime drama. While the on-set incident was undoubtedly a concerning moment, production is expected to continue as planned for the eagerly awaited film.
