After years of uncertainty and a previous cancellation, World War Z 2 is moving forward, according to a report from Ecran Large. This revival comes after Skydance Media's acquisition of Paramount, with Skydance CEO David Ellison confirming the sequel's renewed priority at CinemaCon 2026.

The original World War Z, released in 2013, defied a famously troubled production to become a significant box office success. Despite a hefty production budget of $190 million, it grossed over $540 million worldwide, cementing its status as a surprise hit for Paramount and audiences craving a fresh take on the zombie apocalypse genre. The film starred Brad Pitt as Gerry Lane, a former UN investigator racing against time to find a cure for a global zombie pandemic.

Development on a sequel began almost immediately, but it proved to be a difficult journey. Initially, Juan Antonio Bayona, director of The Impossible and Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, was attached to direct. However, he departed the project after three years. Subsequently, acclaimed filmmaker David Fincher (Seven, The Social Network) stepped in, raising considerable excitement among fans. Yet, even with Fincher at the helm, the project faced insurmountable hurdles and was ultimately canceled in February 2019, leaving many to believe the sequel would never see the light of day.

Now, with Skydance breathing new life into Paramount's slate, World War Z 2 is back on the fast track. Brad Pitt will return as Gerry Lane, anchoring the franchise once more. The choice of Edward Berger as director is a notable one, signaling a potentially more grounded and intense approach. Berger garnered international acclaim for his Oscar-winning war drama All Quiet on the Western Front and more recently for Conclave. This won't be Berger's first collaboration with Pitt; the two recently worked together on the A24 psychological thriller The Riders, which is currently in post-production.

Further bolstering the creative team, British writer Dennis Kelly has been tapped to write the screenplay. Kelly is highly regarded for his work on the critically acclaimed series Utopia and The Third Day, as well as for writing the book for the musical Matilda. His involvement suggests a strong narrative focus for the upcoming film.

As of now, specific plot details for World War Z 2 remain under wraps, and a production start date has yet to be announced. Fans will undoubtedly be eager for more information as this highly anticipated sequel finally lurches towards production. Pitt is also set to star in Heart Of The Beast, directed by David Ayer, which is slated for release soon.
