Outerlight Entertainment, previously known as First Look, is expanding its reach in the independent film landscape. While Bleecker Street will now operate under the Outerlight umbrella, it is set to maintain its distinct brand identity and distribution operations. Outerlight's existing assets include the acclaimed Topic Studios, known for its award-winning films and series. The diversified company also holds Puzzle Pictures and strategic investments in niche streaming platforms like MHz Choice and Passionflix, signaling a broad interest in content distribution across various formats.

Ensuring continuity, Bleecker Street's current leadership team, including CEO Kent Sanderson and President and Chief Marketing Officer Tyler DiNapoli, will remain in their roles. The agreement emphasizes that Bleecker Street will retain full control over its active film slate, ongoing acquisitions, crucial filmmaker relationships, and its established marketing and distribution networks. Kent Sanderson expressed optimism about the future, stating, "Outerlight shares our belief in the power of cinema and the importance of theatrical moviegoing, and its long-term backing gives us additional capacity to pursue the opportunities we see across our core film business." This commitment from Outerlight is expected to empower Bleecker Street to explore new avenues within the film industry while upholding its foundational principles. Financial specifics of the acquisition were not disclosed.

Bleecker Street has consistently carved out a niche for itself since its inception, championing a range of compelling narratives. Just this year, the distributor achieved a significant milestone with "Hadestown: The Musical," which became the highest-grossing live theater capture in history, pulling in over $20 million during a limited theatrical engagement via its Crosswalk event label. This success highlights the company's innovative approach to distribution and its ability to connect with diverse audiences. Beyond recent hits like Alex Gibney’s documentary "Musk," Guy Nattiv’s "The Liberation," and "Spinal Tap II: The End Continues," the label boasts an impressive back catalog.

Founded in 2014 by industry veteran Andrew Karpen, Bleecker Street emerged as a vital player in the indie scene. Karpen, who had previously served as co-CEO of Focus Features, departed that role in 2013 rather than relocate his family to Los Angeles amidst Universal’s restructuring. Under his guidance, Bleecker Street quickly built a reputation for distributing quality cinema, with notable titles such as "Logan Lucky," "Leave No Trace," "Captain Fantastic," and "Trumbo" among its early successes. His vision laid the groundwork for the company’s current standing, and its acquisition by Outerlight marks a new chapter in its journey.
