Fans of the mystical and the mundane will be pleased to know that the Homunculi spirits are set to return, as the BBC has greenlit Small Prophets for a second season. The comedy proved to be a significant hit for the British broadcaster, achieving stellar ratings and drawing a substantial audience.

Created by Mackenzie Crook, widely recognized for his role in the UK version of The Office, the series quickly became a talking point. Its success was further underscored last month when Apple TV secured worldwide rights to stream Season 1.

For its sophomore run, Small Prophets will see a promotion, moving from BBC One to BBC Two. The new season is slated to premiere in 2027.

The series centers on Pearce Quigley as Michael Sleep, a Manchester resident still grappling with the mysterious disappearance of his partner, Clea, seven years prior. While working at a DIY store, Michael, with the help of his father, Brian (played by Michael Palin), embarks on an unusual project: creating magical, prophesying spirits known as Homunculi in his garden shed.

Along his journey, Michael forms an unexpected bond with Kacey (Lauren Patel), all while navigating the demands of his boss Gordon (Crook himself) and the watchful eyes of their nosy neighbors, Bev (Sophie Willan) and Clive (Jon Pointing).

Emma Lawson, BBC interim director of comedy, expressed her enthusiasm: “Mackenzie has created a world packed with wonder, magic and unforgettable characters which feels completely unlike anything else on television and we can’t wait to see where the story takes us next.”

Small Prophets is a collaboration between Treasure Trove Productions and Channel X North. Mackenzie Crook not only created and wrote the series but also directed it. Executive producers include Crook and Lisa Thomas for Treasure Trove, alongside Alan Marke and Jim Reid for Channel X North. Gill Isles serves as the producer, with Sphere Abacus handling international distribution.

Crook himself shared a characteristically whimsical comment on the renewal: “The prophets have foretold that series two will be happening next year and, as we know, they are compelled to speak the truth.”
