The Busan International Film Festival, running from October 6-15, is gearing up for a star-studded edition, with one of its most anticipated guests being Mexican director Alfonso Cuarón. Known for his visually stunning and emotionally resonant films like Gravity and Roma, Cuarón's debut visit to South Korea underscores the festival's growing international prominence.
According to reports from The Hollywood Reporter, Cuarón is expected to participate in the festival's opening ceremony, setting the stage for his engagement with Korean audiences and fellow filmmakers. A highlight of his visit will be a master class, where he will delve into the artistic choices and innovative filmmaking techniques that have defined his illustrious career. This session offers a rare opportunity for aspiring directors and film enthusiasts to gain insights from a master craftsman.
In addition to the master class, Busan will host a special IMAX screening of Gravity, the groundbreaking space thriller that earned Cuarón his first Best Director Oscar in 2014. His second directing Academy Award came in 2019 for Roma, a deeply personal black-and-white drama.
A significant aspect of Cuarón's trip is his support for his son and frequent collaborator, Jonás Cuarón. Jonás will be presenting his new film, Campeón Gabacho, for its Asian premiere within the festival's World Cinema section. Following the screening, audiences will have the chance to engage with the younger Cuarón during a post-screening Q&A session.
Jonás Cuarón is no stranger to acclaimed filmmaking, having co-written Gravity with his father. His directorial credits include the intense thriller Desierto and the Netflix fantasy adventure Chupa. His latest offering, Campeón Gabacho, is described as a poignant yet playful exploration of a Mexican immigrant's journey to build a life in the United States. The film boasts a talented ensemble cast including Juan Daniel García Treviño, Leslie Grace, Rubén Blades, Eddie Marsan, Rosario Dawson, and Cheech Marin. Both Alfonso and Jonás Cuarón produced the film through their banner Esperanto Filmoj, alongside Gabriela Rodriguez and Nicolás Celis.
