Akiva Goldsman, a key creative force behind the acclaimed series Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, recently shared with The Radio Times that the concept for Star Trek: Year One has effectively been abandoned. This potential series aimed to explore the uncharted year of 2264, the period directly preceding Captain Kirk's iconic five-year mission aboard the USS Enterprise, which began in 2265.

Strange New Worlds has meticulously set the stage for this transition, introducing younger versions of beloved original series characters like Spock (Ethan Peck), Uhura (Celia Rose-Gooding), and a nascent James T. Kirk (Paul Wesley). With Strange New Worlds slated to conclude its timeline in 2263, Year One would have offered a direct narrative link to the original Star Trek series, filling in the missing pieces of Kirk's formative command year.

However, Goldsman revealed that despite earlier discussions, the project never received an official green light from Paramount+. Practical hurdles have also contributed to its demise. "Nobody's called, the sets are gone," Goldsman stated, indicating that the production infrastructure that could have supported the spin-off, particularly the sets from Strange New Worlds, has already been dismantled. He added, "Everybody else has started to take other jobs. [...] But I don't see it happening."

While Goldsman expressed his personal disappointment, acknowledging the decision was "above my pay grade," he lamented the missed opportunity. He noted that continuing the story would have been both creatively and economically advantageous when the assets were still available. "There was a moment where it would have been the most expeditious, creatively and economically, to just continue because we had a lot of assets which are now no longer," he explained.

Goldsman, who feels a strong familial connection to the Strange New Worlds team, candidly shared that he believes his personal journey with Star Trek is now complete, despite his willingness to return if a project materialized. "I do think that, at least for me, my time with 'Star Trek' is over now," he reflected, expressing gratitude for the experience.

The shelving of Year One follows other recent disappointments for Star Trek fans, including the cancellation of Star Trek: Prodigy and the non-development of Star Trek: Legacy. As Strange New Worlds approaches its planned conclusion after five seasons, and Star Trek: Starfleet Academy also nears its end, the franchise appears to be entering a new phase. Paramount and Skydance are reportedly moving forward with a feature film reboot, with John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein (known for Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves) at the helm, signaling a significant shift in the Star Trek universe's trajectory.
