Jennifer Lawrence, an Academy Award winner and one of Hollywood’s most sought-after talents, has officially boarded Zach Cregger’s upcoming original sci-fi thriller, The Flood. The film, which Cregger will write, direct, and produce, is slated for an August 11, 2028 release by Warner Bros.' New Line Cinema, as first reported by Deadline.

Plot details for The Flood are currently being kept under wraps, promising a fresh and mysterious entry into the sci-fi genre. The announcement marks a significant reunion for Cregger and New Line, building on their successful collaboration for his horror feature Weapons.

Weapons proved to be a critical and commercial hit, leading the domestic box office for four consecutive weeks and earning an impressive $270 million worldwide last year. The film also garnered an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for Amy Madigan, highlighting Cregger's ability to craft compelling narratives and draw strong performances. This track record has clearly solidified his standing with the studio.

Warner Bros. Motion Picture chairs Mike De Luca and Pam Abdy expressed their enthusiasm for the new project and their star. “Jennifer Lawrence is one of the most gifted and compelling actors working today, and we are thrilled to have her at the center of Zach’s bold and wholly original vision for The Flood,” they stated. They further added, “Following our extraordinary experience together on Weapons, we could not be more excited to reunite with Zach and the team at Vertigo, as well as Amblin to bring this ambitious film to audiences around the world.”

Cregger himself echoed this excitement for Lawrence’s involvement. “Jennifer is one of a kind, and I’m beyond excited to see her in this role,” he commented. Amblin Entertainment is set to produce The Flood alongside Roy Lee and Miri Yoon of Vertigo Entertainment.

Lawrence, who earned her Best Actress Oscar for Silver Linings Playbook in 2013, boasts an impressive filmography including American Hustle, Joy, Don’t Look Up, and The Hunger Games franchise. Most recently, she received a Golden Globe nomination for her performance in Die My Love. Through her production company, Excellent Cadaver, she has also produced several films and documentaries, with an upcoming project What Happens at Night set to star Lawrence alongside Leonardo DiCaprio and directed by Martin Scorsese. Her casting in The Flood signals another high-profile and intriguing role for the versatile actress.
