The global buzz surrounding Yeon Sang-ho's 'Paradise Lost' is undeniable, with distributor CJ ENM announcing robust international sales that have already seen the film’s revenue surpass its net production budget. Key distribution deals include Twin for Japan, The Jokers Films for France, and Well Go USA for North America, ensuring the film will reach a vast international audience.
Building on its successful festival circuit, where it enjoyed sold-out screenings at the Toronto International Film Festival (Special Presentations) and the Busan International Film Festival (Gala Presentation), 'Paradise Lost' is now set for its U.S. premiere. American audiences will get their first look at the film in the ‘Spotlight on Korea’ section of the Hawaii International Film Festival (HIFF), with screenings scheduled for November 1 and 4. The festival itself runs from October 21 through November 15, celebrating cinema from around the globe with a special focus on Asia and the Pacific.
Yeon Sang-ho’s reputation precedes him, thanks to critically acclaimed works like the zombie blockbuster 'Train to Busan', its sequel 'Peninsula', and the Cannes-premiering 'Colony'. His latest endeavor, 'Paradise Lost', delves into a suspenseful narrative centered on a mother whose son mysteriously vanished nine years prior when a bus full of children disappeared. Her life is upended when, against all odds, her long-presumed-dead son suddenly returns.
The film stars Hyun-joo Kim and Hyeon-seong Bae, bringing to life a story that CJ ENM believes has universal appeal. "The film combines a distinctive premise with a deeply felt exploration of family and motherhood," CJ ENM stated, adding that "these universal emotions are resonating across cultures."
While a South Korean theatrical release is anticipated for October 21, international audiences can look forward to 'Paradise Lost' hitting cinemas soon. Taiwan is set for an October 23 release, followed by Singapore on November 5. North America and Vietnam will see the film on November 6, with Indonesia following on November 13.
