Moviegoers can mark their calendars for October 1, 2027, as this highly anticipated film prepares for its theatrical debut. According to an exclusive report from Deadline, the project has quickly moved to the forefront of both Washington’s and McQuarrie's busy schedules.

The plot promises a compelling and dramatic narrative, centering on a former police detective serving a life sentence. Diagnosed with terminal brain cancer and granted compassionate release with only six months to live, he returns home to an estranged daughter and a grandson he has never met. While his sole desire is to make amends and escape his dark past, the past, it seems, has not forgotten him.

For Denzel Washington, a two-time Academy Award winner, this film comes after a planned reunion with director Antoine Fuqua for a Netflix epic about Hannibal was put on hold due to budgetary issues. This development freed Washington to explore other projects, with meetings with Christopher McQuarrie quickly solidifying his commitment to this new thriller. Washington has recently been active, returning to Broadway in Othello and starring in Spike Lee’s Highest 2 Lowest. He is also set to appear in Netflix’s The Take alongside Robert Pattinson and Daisy Edgar-Jones, slated for a 2027 release.

Christopher McQuarrie, an Oscar winner himself, is known for redefining the modern action spectacle through his work on the Mission: Impossible franchise, having helmed the last four installments, including the recent Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning. This untitled thriller signifies his return to the crime and suspense genre, where he first made his mark with critically acclaimed films like Jack Reacher, The Way of the Gun, and The Usual Suspects. His return to these roots is sure to excite fans of his earlier, grittier work.

The script for the film was penned by Scott Barkan and Gregg Zehentner. McQuarrie will also take on a producing role alongside Heather McQuarrie, Scott Stuber, and Nick Nesbitt for United Artists. Joseph Restaino for Hungry Bull Productions, Reza Moheet and Norman Aladjem for Mainstay Entertainment, Katia Washington, and Tommy Harper round out the producing team, with Tony Stopperan, Tim Honigman, and Joe Guest serving as executive producers.

United Artists, under Scott Stuber, is actively building a robust slate, currently in production on Lizard Music and in post-production on a new Highlander film. They are also prepping high-profile projects like Michael Mann’s Heat 2 and The Mandela Catalogue, underscoring their commitment to diverse and impactful cinema.
