The union announced Thursday that its members voted 94.95% in favor of the 2026 Television Animation Agreement and Basic Cable Animation Agreement with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP). This decisive approval secures a 12.6% wage increase over the four-year term of the contracts, alongside crucial enhancements to residuals and boosts for the Health Plan, pension, and retirement funds.
A standout feature of the new deal is the implementation of enhanced protections concerning the use of artificial intelligence. In an era where AI technology poses both opportunities and threats to creative industries, these provisions are designed to prevent the unauthorized replication of performers' voices and likenesses, ensuring fair compensation and consent for any AI-generated performances. This aspect of the agreement is particularly vital for voice actors, whose unique vocal talents are central to their craft.
SAG-AFTRA President Sean Astin expressed his gratitude for the diligent work behind the agreement. "As someone who often works in TV animation, my heartfelt thanks goes out to the TV Animation Negotiating Committee and co-chairs Bob Bergen and David Jolliffe for putting in the time and effort to get SAG-AFTRA members a dignified deal with essential AI protections," Astin stated. National Executive Director & CEO Duncan Crabtree-Ireland echoed these sentiments, highlighting the importance of the new terms. "SAG-AFTRA members who work in TV Animation are entitled to meaningful protections around AI and wages that reflect the value of their labor," Crabtree-Ireland commented, commending the negotiating committee and staff for their "extraordinary and diligent work."
The new agreements are set to become effective retroactively from July 1, 2026, and will remain in force until June 30, 2030. This four-year framework provides stability and a clear pathway for animation performers, ensuring their contributions are valued and their careers sustainable in a rapidly changing industry. The strong mandate from the membership underscores the collective power of performers in shaping their future.
