The news, initially reported by The Hollywood Reporter, confirms that Brendan Fraser will reprise his role as the intrepid Rick O’Connell, with Rachel Weisz returning as the brilliant Egyptologist Evie O’Connell. Their chemistry was a cornerstone of the 1999 blockbuster The Mummy and its 2001 sequel, The Mummy Returns, delighting audiences and cementing the films as modern adventure classics.
Joining Fraser and Weisz in this new chapter are returning cast members John Hannah, Michael Johnston, Numan Acar, Kevin J. O’Connor, and Oded Fehr, promising a familiar yet fresh ensemble for the long-awaited sequel.
Helming The Mummy: Book of the Dead are the acclaimed directorial duo Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, collectively known as Radio Silence. The pair has a strong track record of revitalizing dormant franchises, notably with their successful takes on Scream (2022) and Scream VI, as well as this year's Ready or Not 2: Here I Come. Their involvement suggests a blend of thrilling action and perhaps a touch of modern horror sensibilities, which could be an exciting evolution for the franchise. The screenplay for the new film is penned by David Coggeshall, known for his work on The Family Plan.
The production team includes veteran franchise producer Sean Daniel, who has been involved in five previous The Mummy titles. He is joined by William Sherak, James Vanderbilt, and Paul Neinstein from Project X Entertainment, along with Clayton Townsend. Brendan Fraser himself will also serve as an executive producer, alongside Jason F. Brown of Hivemind.
The original The Mummy franchise, which began with Boris Karloff in 1932, was reimagined in 1999 by director Stephen Sommers. That film, starring Fraser and Weisz, became a global phenomenon, blending action, humor, and supernatural thrills. Reflecting on its enduring popularity for the 25th anniversary of the 1999 film, Sommers told The Hollywood Reporter, "It’s so funny how it just never went away." He added that the film "somehow, it’s endeared itself to a lot of people," a sentiment clearly shared by Universal in greenlighting this new installment.
With a strong creative team, the return of its beloved stars, and a release date now firmly on the calendar, The Mummy: Book of the Dead is poised to rekindle the magic and adventure that made the franchise a global favorite.
