The ambitious project, which initially launched in over 3,300 theaters, has seen its footprint shrink by a staggering 3,100 locations since its debut. According to reports from Collider, Digger is now entering its fourth week playing in merely 200-odd venues, a stark contrast to its wide release just weeks prior. This rapid decline began swiftly, with the film losing 2,500 theaters after just two weeks—a drop so significant it ranks as the tenth-biggest of all time. This week, another 583 locations are pulling the feature, solidifying its status as a major theatrical disappointment.
The numbers paint a grim picture for the high-profile collaboration. Against a reported production budget as high as $180 million, Digger managed a paltry $8 million in its domestic opening weekend. Its worldwide gross currently hovers under $50 million, a figure far below expectations for a film fronted by Tom Cruise and helmed by an acclaimed director like Iñárritu. For context, even the much-discussed Joker: Folie à Deux crossed the $200 million mark, highlighting Digger's severe underperformance. Its struggles were so pronounced that IMAX screens quickly replaced it with Christopher Nolan’s summer hit, The Odyssey, after just one week.
The film's reception has been as divisive as its box-office performance. Critical reviews were split, with some praising its audacity while others found it self-aggrandizing. On Rotten Tomatoes, Digger holds a "rotten" score of 52%. The consensus from the aggregator notes, "A stylized satire whose audacious design proves too mannered for some of the laughs to smoothly land, Digger is a bold swing of the shovel by Tom Cruise and Alejandro González Iñárritu that misses as often as it strikes gold."
Originally, Digger was marketed with an early trailer featuring clips from Cruise's most memorable movies, intended as a tribute to his cinematic contributions. There were even whispers of an Oscar campaign for Cruise ahead of its release. However, the film's significant commercial and critical struggles have undoubtedly dampened those aspirations, burdening any potential awards momentum.
Beyond Cruise, the film features an impressive ensemble cast including Riz Ahmed, John Goodman, Sandra Hüller, Michael Stuhlbarg, Jesse Plemons, and Emma D'Arcy. Despite the talent involved, Digger has failed to resonate with audiences, and there is currently no announced date for its Premium Video On Demand (PVOD) release.
