The road to the big screen for Todd Haynes' "De Noche" has been far from smooth. As reported by AlloCiné, the film faced a critical moment in August 2024 when Joaquin Phoenix, originally slated for the lead role, departed the project a mere five days before cameras were set to roll. This eleventh-hour exit put the entire production in jeopardy, with funds already spent and crews ready to begin.
However, the film found its savior in Pedro Pascal, who stepped in to fill the vacancy left by the Oscar-winning actor. Pascal's involvement not only rescued the project but, according to Haynes, proved instrumental in its realization. With Pascal now leading the cast, "De Noche" completed principal photography and is currently in the editing phase, with a 2027 festival circuit debut, potentially kicking off at the Cannes Film Festival, firmly in its sights.
Co-written by Haynes and Jon Raymond, "De Noche" promises an intense and passionate love story set against the backdrop of a deeply corrupted Los Angeles. Pascal portrays a police officer, while Danny Ramirez, known for his role in "Top Gun: Maverick," plays a much younger school teacher. Haynes, speaking to AlloCiné during a visit to Paris to discuss the restoration of his earlier works, shed more light on the film's thematic depth.
"The story takes place in an extremely corrupt Los Angeles," Haynes revealed, adding that this dimension resonates powerfully with contemporary society, particularly in the United States. He noted that the relevance of these themes has only grown since the project's inception, drawing parallels to the explorations of love and societal pressures seen in his acclaimed 2015 film, "Carol."
The director also acknowledged the immense effort required to bring "De Noche" to fruition. "Everyone had to make enormous sacrifices for the film to see the light of day," Haynes stated, reflecting on a production process that demanded extraordinary dedication from the entire team, reminiscent of the challenges faced during his earlier, independent projects like "Poison."
Haynes was particularly effusive in his praise for Pascal's contribution. "The film owes him a lot: to his extraordinary involvement, his audacity and his way of investing himself fully in the role," he commented, also extending similar commendation to Danny Ramirez. This role further cements Pascal's evolving career trajectory, as the actor, widely recognized for blockbuster franchises like "Star Wars" and "The Last of Us," increasingly embraces more intimate and independent cinematic ventures. This shift is also evident in upcoming projects such as Tony Gilroy's "Behemoth!," where Pascal plays a cellist discovering his daughter.
As "De Noche" moves closer to its anticipated 2027 premiere, the combination of Todd Haynes' distinctive directorial vision and Pedro Pascal's acclaimed dramatic prowess is generating significant buzz, promising a compelling and timely cinematic experience.
