During a Q&A session following a screening of his acclaimed film Once Upon a Time in Hollywood at the TCL Chinese Theater, Tarantino shocked the audience by unveiling the first 17 minutes of the new project. Titled The Further Mis-Adventures of Cliff Booth, the film sees Brad Pitt reprise his Oscar-winning role as the enigmatic stunt double.
Set in 1977, the spinoff picks up nearly a decade after the original story. The footage showcased Booth working as a cinema projectionist, hinting at his continued involvement in more perilous, 'unsavory business' on the side. While Tarantino penned the script, he has handed the directorial reins to David Fincher, a notable collaboration that has piqued considerable interest.
Explaining his decision to dive back into the world of Cliff Booth, Tarantino cited a memorable review of Once Upon a Time in Hollywood that described it as "the first world Quentin Tarantino has ever created that he would like to live in." This sentiment, coupled with his affection for the character, sparked the idea for a continuation. He elaborated on his vision for Booth, stating, "I loved the Cliff Booth character, I loved the way that Brad played him, and there was this aspect of him as sort of like a paperback hero." This perspective led him to imagine a series of adventures for the character, akin to classic pulp fiction stories.
Tarantino also revealed his deep personal investment in the Once Upon a Time universe, having expanded its mythology through a novel and continuous creative exploration. He emphasized his enjoyment of simply "hanging out" with the characters, noting that the new project allows for that without being strictly confined to a complex plot.
The director's choice not to direct The Further Mis-Adventures of Cliff Booth aligns with his evolving career focus. As he prepares for an upcoming play, Tarantino expressed a shift towards writing. "As I’m getting older, being a man of letters is more my thing," he remarked, indicating his preference for screenplays, books, and plays over directing at this stage of his career.
The Further Mis-Adventures of Cliff Booth is scheduled for an Imax release on November 25, followed by its streaming debut on Netflix on December 23.
