Acclaimed filmmaker Taika Waititi has delivered a significant update regarding his involvement with the 'Star Wars' universe, confirming that the movie he has been developing since 2020 has been put on an indefinite pause. Speaking to Inverse while promoting his latest directorial effort, 'Klara and the Sun,' Waititi candidly addressed the status of the project, which has been a subject of much speculation among fans.
"I hate to break this to you, but we’re going to actually put it on ice and we’re working on a different thing together," Waititi told Inverse, offering a direct answer to the film's status. He further elaborated on the situation, acknowledging the definitive nature of the delay. "It’s very iced. I’ve got about four other movies I’m trying to do," he added, hinting at a busy slate that contributes to the 'Star Wars' film's sidelined status. However, he left a glimmer of hope for its eventual return, musing, "Ice ages do come to an end… Who knows?"
The New Zealand director, known for his distinctive blend of humor and heart in films like 'Thor: Ragnarok' and 'Jojo Rabbit,' was tapped to write and direct a new 'Star Wars' feature. Since its announcement, fans have eagerly awaited details on how Waititi's quirky style would integrate into the beloved franchise. Earlier this year, Waititi had shared his ambition for the project, expressing a desire to recapture the spirit of the original films while forging a unique path within the expansive saga.
He had previously spoken about wanting to "harness a little bit more of the fun from the original films," aiming to balance the high stakes of the 'Star Wars' universe with a sense of enjoyment. Waititi also suggested his film would explore a corner of the galaxy "a little bit separate" from existing narratives, allowing it to be "a little different and a little bit more its own thing." This approach had excited many who hoped for a fresh take on the franchise following recent entries.
Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy had previously offered a more optimistic, albeit cautious, assessment of the film's progress, noting it was "still somewhat alive." Waititi's recent comments, however, paint a clearer picture of the immediate future: the project is firmly on hold as he prioritizes other creative endeavors. While the door isn't entirely closed, it seems fans will have to wait considerably longer, if at all, to see Waititi's unique vision of the 'Star Wars' galaxy come to fruition.
