The new action-thriller 'Mayday' has rapidly captivated audiences across the globe, becoming a major streaming event for Apple TV+ since its debut on September 4. The film, which puts a fresh Cold War spin on the classic odd-couple dynamic, pairs Hollywood stalwart Ryan Reynolds with the esteemed British actor and director Kenneth Branagh.
Directed by the duo John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein, known for their work on 'Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves,' 'Mayday' plunges viewers into the tense atmosphere of the Cold War. Reynolds stars as Troy “Assassin” Kelly, a hotshot U.S. Navy pilot whose top-secret mission over Russian territory goes awry, leaving him stranded behind enemy lines. His only hope for survival and escape rests on an unlikely alliance with Nikolai Ustinov, an eccentric former KGB agent portrayed by Branagh.
The film's cast also features a strong ensemble, including Maria Bakalova ('Borat Subsequent Moviefilm') as Anna Ustinov, Marcin Dorociński ('The Queen’s Gambit') as Alexander Volkov, and veteran actor David Morse ('The Green Mile') as Harold Kelly. Louis Cancelmi, Wendy Crewson, and Jesse Buck round out the supporting roles.
Actress Maria Bakalova shared her enthusiasm for the project and her co-stars in an interview with MovieWeb, highlighting the positive atmosphere on set. "I've been lucky with the people that I got a chance to work with, not only because they're proven to be incredibly talented... but they're really kind human beings," Bakalova stated. She further praised Reynolds, noting he "has been very supportive, open, and very funny," and affectionately referred to Branagh as "a British treasure." Bakalova also admitted the film ignited a new passion for the action genre, a departure from her previous focus on more dramatic European cinema.
'Mayday' is currently streaming exclusively on Apple TV+, cementing its position as a must-watch for fans of high-stakes action and compelling character dynamics.
