Fans of the vibrant musical comedy Glee have fresh reason to hope for a revival, with co-creator Ryan Murphy announcing that a script for a potential reboot is now complete. Murphy, known for his expansive television empire, shared the news with Entertainment Tonight while attending the American Horror Story premiere, indicating that preliminary conversations with the original cast have been met with eager anticipation.
“Well, funny you ask, because I just finished the script an hour ago,” Murphy told the outlet, confirming that he, alongside original co-creators Brad Falchuk and Ian Brennan, had penned a new narrative for the beloved series. The trio were instrumental in crafting the first two seasons of the original show, which captivated audiences from 2009 to 2015.
Murphy further elaborated on his outreach to the ensemble, stating he had been in contact with approximately ten of the original actors. While the script remains unread by the cast, their initial reaction has been overwhelmingly positive. Murphy noted, "It’s very sweet, and they all had a lot of questions, but they all were very enthusiastic about the idea." He added a note of caution, however, emphasizing the early stages of the project: "Nobody’s read it. So I don’t know, we’ll see."
This isn't the first time Murphy has hinted at Glee's potential return. In July, he told People that the show had experienced a resurgence in popularity among younger audiences. "So many young people now watch it," he observed, expressing his own enduring affection for the series. "My nostalgia and love for that show is enough that I’m like, ‘Well, maybe people would like to see a new incarnation of that in some capacity.'"
Glee became a cultural phenomenon during its six-season run on Fox, celebrated for its blend of musical performances, dramatic storylines, and comedic flair. The series centered on the New Directions glee club at the fictional William McKinley High School in Lima, Ohio, led by Spanish teacher Will Schuester, played by Matthew Morrison. The ensemble cast, including Lea Michele, Cory Monteith, Amber Riley, Chris Colfer, Dianna Agron, Naya Rivera, Heather Morris, Kevin McHale, Jenna Ushkowitz, Darren Criss, Harry Shum Jr., and Mark Salling, became household names.
