Attending the San Sebastián Film Festival, Brad Pitt offered his perspective on the current state of the film industry, particularly focusing on independent cinema and the impact of streaming. Speaking to a packed audience, as reported by Deadline, Pitt expressed his belief that the indie film scene is thriving.

"The current setup is really conducive to independent cinema in a really cool way because more eyes are getting on these projects. It even feels as strong as in the ’90s," Pitt stated, drawing a parallel to a period often celebrated for its vibrant independent film movement. He extended his praise to streaming platforms, acknowledging their significant role in fostering new talent and diverse storytelling.

According to Pitt, "Streaming has brought us so many more opportunities for actors, writers, directors. And because of that, we have a greater plethora of really interesting stories and really interesting talents, and that’s been amazing."

However, the veteran actor also highlighted a pressing issue: the increasing difficulty for mid-budget films—those costing between $30 million and $60 million—to secure funding and distribution. Pitt described these films as his "bread and butter" and lamented the challenges studios face in recouping their investment in this category, often favoring either large-scale blockbusters or low-budget indies.

"I’m hoping those movies still have space, because that’s usually where I end up most, in the middle ground," he remarked, underscoring the importance of this cinematic tier for creative exploration and diverse narratives.

Pitt's appearance at San Sebastián also marks the screening of his new film, Heart of the Beast. Directed by David Ayer, the film reunites Pitt with Ayer for the first time since their 2014 WWII drama, Fury. The intense survival thriller follows a former Army Special Forces soldier, played by Pitt, and his retired combat dog as they fight for survival in the unforgiving Alaskan wilderness after a harrowing plane crash. Written by Cameron Alexander, the film is produced by Olivia Hamilton, Marty Bowen, David Ayer, and Brad Pitt, among others. Paramount is set to release Heart of the Beast on September 25.
