Peacock, NBCUniversal's streaming service, has given the go-ahead for a new scripted television series based on the immensely popular 'Fast & Furious' film franchise. The streamer is targeting a 2028 premiere for the show, a strategic move that would align its debut with the theatrical release of the next film installment, 'Fast Forever,' slated for March 17, 2028.

Vin Diesel, the charismatic face of the 'Fast & Furious' films, is deeply involved in the television adaptation, serving as an executive producer. Diesel had previously revealed plans for a scripted series during NBCUniversal's upfront presentation in May, as reported by Variety. At the time, he emphasized the long-standing fan demand for an expanded universe and his careful approach to bringing the franchise to TV.

"For the last decade, we have realized that the fans have wanted more," Diesel stated, highlighting the desire to broaden the stories of the legacy characters. He also underscored the importance of timing and the protection of the franchise's core values, crediting Donna Langley for overseeing the expansion.

Joining Diesel in the executive production team are One Race’s Sam Vincent, Original Film’s Neal H. Moritz and Pavun Shetty, Jeff Kirschenbaum, and Chris Morgan from Chris Morgan Productions. The series has also tapped experienced talent for its creative helm, with Mike Daniels ('Sons of Anarchy,' 'Shades of Blue') and Wolfe Coleman ('Shades of Blue,' '911: Lone Star') set to serve as co-showrunners, pilot writers, and executive producers. Universal Television, a division of Universal Studio Group, is the studio behind the project.

This isn't the first time the 'Fast & Furious' universe has ventured into television; Netflix previously aired the animated series 'Fast & Furious Spy Racers' for six seasons between 2019 and 2021. However, the Peacock series will be the franchise's first live-action scripted foray into the TV landscape, promising to deliver the same blend of action, family themes, and automotive thrills that have captivated audiences worldwide for over two decades. The franchise, which celebrates its 25th anniversary this year, began with the release of 'The Fast and the Furious' in June 2001, starring Diesel as Dominic Toretto and Paul Walker as Brian O’Conner, igniting a global phenomenon.
