The upcoming film, titled The Brand, has secured Nicolas Cage in a pivotal role as Carter Briggs, the formidable head of a dominant white gang within San Quentin prison. He will be joined by a strong ensemble cast featuring Alexander Ludwig (Vikings), Gabriel Basso (The Night Agent), and Maria Bakalova (Borat 2).

According to an exclusive report from Deadline, the narrative centers on Taylor Hartman, a young inmate played by Ludwig, who is taken under Briggs' wing. As prison authorities attempt to dismantle the gang by relocating its members, they inadvertently facilitate the expansion of its criminal enterprise far beyond prison walls. Taylor finds himself torn between his burgeoning influence within the gang, his loyalty to Briggs, and his desire to build a life with Lilly (Bakalova). The escalating violence forces Taylor to confront a difficult choice: whether to dismantle the very empire he helped create.

The project draws its inspiration from an eponymous article by journalist David Grann, whose works have previously been adapted into acclaimed films such as Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon and James Gray’s The Lost City of Z. This film will explore the birth of the Aryan Brotherhood within the American prison system in 1964.

The Brand has been in development for over a decade, with various actors, including Frank Grillo, Alex Pettyfer, and Tom Hooper, previously attached to earlier iterations that never fully materialized. Now, with a solid cast in place, the film appears to be moving forward.

Vincent Grashaw, known for his work on prison-set films like Gangland and Bruton, will direct. Grashaw expressed his excitement for the project, noting the opportunity to approach a new prison story from a fresh, character-driven angle, aiming to capture the organization's rise as both fascinating and unsettling. The screenplay is penned by Alessandro Camon, who received an Oscar nomination for his work on 2009’s The Messenger.

While no official release date has been set, filming for The Brand is anticipated to commence in 2027.
