Neve Campbell, synonymous with the Scream franchise as its perennial "final girl" Sidney Prescott, has confirmed she will be back for Scream 8. Speaking to AP News, Campbell revealed her upcoming projects, stating, "Scream 8. That's also in preparation. [...] You know I can't tell you anything about Scream 8. I'll be in it."

This confirmation, while not entirely unexpected given the box office performance of Scream 7, solidifies Campbell's continued presence in the series, a role that has seen its share of recent upheaval. The path to Scream 7 was famously rocky. The film faced a dramatic cast shake-up when Melissa Barrera was fired from the project for social media posts, leading to Jenna Ortega's subsequent departure due to scheduling conflicts (though many speculate it was in solidarity). Director Christopher Landon also exited the project, citing a "nightmare" production.

This left the seventh installment in disarray, prompting the return of original Scream screenwriter Kevin Williamson to pen the script and direct. Crucially, it also paved the way for Neve Campbell's return, who had previously opted out of Scream 6 over a salary dispute she deemed disrespectful. Reports indicated that her return for Scream 7 came with a substantial pay increase, securing her central role once more.

Despite the behind-the-scenes chaos, Scream 7 managed to slash its way to a global box office total of $214 million. This figure surpassed its predecessors, Scream 6 ($167 million) and Scream 5 ($138 million), making Scream 8 an almost inevitable sequel. Prior to his departure from the director's chair, Kevin Williamson had even hinted at early discussions for Scream 8 with Campbell. As reported by Deadline, Williamson recalled brainstorming on set: "Neve had this great idea, and everyone immediately latched onto it."

However, Williamson later clarified to The Ankler that his involvement with Scream 7 was a "one-off" directing gig, stating, "It was always planned as a one-off. I hope it's not a surprise to anyone." This means Scream 8 will see a new director at the helm, though Williamson remains a key creative figure in the franchise.

Not everyone involved with Scream 7 shares the same enthusiasm. Actor Matthew Lillard, who reprised his role as Stu in the seventh film, recently expressed regret for his participation. He stated he felt ashamed for not having considered Melissa Barrera's situation more deeply when he agreed to return, highlighting the lingering ethical concerns surrounding the production changes.

While Campbell is confirmed, other returning cast members are highly anticipated. Courteney Cox, the only actor to have appeared in every Scream film as Gale Weathers, is expected to return. Isabel May, who played Sidney's daughter in Scream 7, is also a likely candidate, along with Jasmin Savoy Brown and Mason Gooding, who portray the fan-favorite twins Mindy and Chad Meeks-Martin since Scream 5.

Scream 8 is currently being written by Lilla and Nora Zuckerman, known for their work on Poker Face. While no official release date has been announced, the franchise's recent pattern suggests a possible early 2028 release, following the footsteps of its recent predecessors.
