As reported by Ecranlarge.com, the new preview for The Mosquito Bowl offers a glimpse into Berg's signature style, which often intertwines themes of conflict and American football. Known for his work on films like The Kingdom, Battleship, and Lone Survivor, Berg frequently explores the pressures and camaraderie found in high-stakes environments, a sensibility he previously brought to the football drama Friday Night Lights.
This upcoming Netflix feature sees Berg once again delving into these familiar territories, co-writing the screenplay with Mark L. Smith, whose credits include The Revenant and the upcoming Twisters. The story is adapted from a novel by Buzz Bissinger, who also penned the book that inspired Friday Night Lights.
A True Story of Wartime Grit
The Mosquito Bowl is inspired by the incredible true events surrounding four American football prodigies. Their lives are irrevocably altered when they are thrust into the Pacific theater of World War II, navigating the aftermath of Pearl Harbor and the brutal prelude to the Battle of Okinawa. The newly released trailer sets a stark tone, utilizing desaturated cinematography, striking framing, and a potent mix of flamboyant action and visceral violence, hinting at a raw and unflinching portrayal of combat.
The film boasts a notable ensemble cast, featuring rising talents such as Nicholas Galitzine, recently seen in Masters of the Universe, and Bill Skarsgård, known for his roles in On l'appelait Robin des Bois and the IT franchise. They are joined by Ray Nicholson (Smile 2, Novocaïne) and Tom Francis (You). Adding an authentic touch, former NFL player, WWE analyst, and podcast host Pat McAfee also appears in the film.

The Mosquito Bowl is slated for release on Netflix on November 25. Following this project, Peter Berg is set to tackle another ambitious adaptation: a film based on the popular video game franchise Call of Duty, which he will co-write with Taylor Sheridan, drawing inspiration from the Modern Warfare series. Details regarding its release remain under wraps.
