Action cinema icon Keanu Reeves is officially on board to star in Netflix's new thriller, Maelstrom. The project will see Reeves collaborating with director Jaume Collet-Serra, known for his work on action films like Carry-On and Jungle Cruise.
Reeves takes over the lead role from Alan Ritchson, who reportedly exited the production for undisclosed reasons. While representatives for Netflix have declined to comment on the casting change, the move positions Reeves at the forefront of what promises to be an intense, high-stakes narrative.
Maelstrom centers on a Federal Marshal tasked with protecting the fiancée of an arms dealer who has turned witness. The plot escalates into a brutal, communication-severing night as a hurricane cuts off all reinforcements, leaving them stranded and vulnerable to the arms dealer's vengeful men. The current draft of the script is credited to Mark Bianculli, building upon an initial draft by the late Gregory Fitzpatrick. This project has a long history, having first been conceived as a spec script at Warner Bros. back in 1993, highlighting its journey through development before finding its home at Netflix.
Producing the film are Jeff Robinov and Tabitha Shick of Talking Pictures, who will guide the long-gestating project to the screen with Reeves at its helm.
This casting news arrives as Reeves is experiencing a particularly busy and successful period in his career. Fresh off the critical and commercial triumph of John Wick: Chapter 4, he is aggressively pursuing a variety of roles across different genres and platforms. His upcoming projects include talks to lead James Wan's take on the South Korean crime actioner The Gangster, The Cop, The Devil for Paramount, where he is also slated to reprise his voice role as Shadow in Sonic the Hedgehog 4. Furthermore, Reeves recently established his new banner, Two Dragonflies, under which he will produce and star in an adaptation of Oliver Lowe's forthcoming novel, Kill Current: A Jon Hendricks Thriller. His partners in this venture are The Arena and Zando.
Beyond these, Reeves' schedule also features the Warner Bros. sci-fi flick Shiver and The Entertainment System Is Down, directed by multiple Palme d’Or winner Ruben Östlund. The initial report of Reeves' involvement in Maelstrom was made by Page Six Hollywood, with Deadline confirming the details of this significant casting.
