David Oyelowo steps into the formidable role of Silver, a character whose peg leg and parrot have become synonymous with the image of a pirate in popular culture. Oyelowo's casting marks a significant moment, as he is the first Black actor to portray the character, a detail he recently discussed with Collider. He noted his appreciation for how this adaptation acknowledges the historical truth of pirates of African descent, stating, "I love the fact that even though Robert Louis Stevenson didn't put that in the book, this version of it acknowledges that truth. And, you know, I also get to sort of have one leg and a parrot, so what's not to like about that." This take adds a layer of historical nuance to Stevenson's enduring creation, which famously inspired the "pirate accent" through Robert Newton's 1950 portrayal.
