The enchanting world of 'Coven Academy' is set to expand with a confirmed second season, as Disney announced the renewal of the supernatural teen drama. The series, which quickly captivated audiences with its unique blend of magical intrigue and high school drama, first premiered on Freeform before its full season became available on Disney+, Hulu, and Freeform on Demand.
Created by Tim Federle, known for his work on High School Musical: The Musical: The Series, 'Coven Academy' plunges viewers into an exclusive magic boarding school. Here, three teenage witches navigate a complex social landscape alongside their dangerously charming warlock peers, where power is currency and secrets can be lethal. The first season followed protagonists like Briar (Malina Pauli Weissman), a fiercely independent New Yorker discovering her powers; Jake (Malachi Barton), a magnetic warlock; and Sasha (Jordan Leftwich), an empathic mind-reader, as they confronted ancient supernatural conflicts and budding romances.
The show's renewal comes as no surprise, given its impressive performance metrics. According to The Hollywood Reporter, 'Coven Academy' garnered 20.3 million global hours in its initial three weeks on Disney+ and Hulu. Its reach extended even further, accumulating an additional 30 million views after key snippets were released on TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube. Critically, it soared to the No. 1 streaming series among teens aged 12-17 during its premiere weekend, solidifying its status as a Gen Z favorite.
A distinctive aspect of 'Coven Academy's' first season was its shorter episode lengths, ranging from just 10 to 22 minutes. Federle explained this creative choice to The Hollywood Reporter, stating, "We wanted to take that traditional storytelling muscle... but then try something that felt more chapter-based." He aimed for a highly bingeable experience, where typical commercial breaks simply marked the end of a chapter, encouraging continuous viewing.
Federle's passion for the magical realm was a driving force behind the series. "I just love that space and I love the opportunity of magic," he shared, reflecting on the show's origins. The creative process was remarkably swift, with Federle penning the pilot's first draft in a single night after an initial discussion with Disney executives. This organic development, free from existing intellectual property constraints, allowed for a fluid and rapid creative flow.
Alongside Federle, Darren Swimmer, Todd Slavkin, Amanda Row, and Bronwyn North-Reist served as executive producers for the first season. With its compelling narrative, strong cast including Tiffani Thiessen as the formidable head of the school, and innovative format, 'Coven Academy' is poised to conjure even more magic in its upcoming second season.
