Seth Grahame-Smith, known for his work on projects like Now You See Me: Now You Don’t, is penning the screenplay for the upcoming reboot. Charles Roven and Andrew Lazar are attached as producers for the film.

The original Get Smart spy spoof series was the brainchild of Mel Brooks and Buck Henry, first airing on NBC in 1965. The show, which famously debuted just three years after the first James Bond film starring Sean Connery, featured Don Adams as the bumbling secret agent Maxwell Smart, alongside Barbara Feldon and Edward Platt.

The property previously received a feature film adaptation in 2008, directed by Peter Segal. That iteration starred Steve Carell as Maxwell Smart, with Anne Hathaway and Dwayne Johnson in supporting roles. It achieved a global box office total of $230 million, though plans for a sequel ultimately stalled.

The Hollywood Reporter's critic Kirk Honeycutt, in his review of the 2008 movie, observed, “This is a slap-dash effort whose producers threw money and stunts onscreen instead of the satirical gags and one-liners that made the old spy spoof so memorable.”

Mulaney initially gained prominence as a writer for Saturday Night Live, later releasing highly successful Netflix comedy specials such as John Mulaney & The Sack Lunch Bunch and Baby J. His recent acting credits include a recurring role on the acclaimed series The Bear, voice work for Big Mouth, and an upcoming part in David O. Russell’s John Madden biopic.
