As the holiday season draws closer, cinematic offerings are beginning to emerge, and among them is the British production Merry Christmas Aubrey Flint. The film, which recently unveiled its exclusive first trailer via Collider, casts John Bradley in the lead role, a departure from his well-known portrayal of Samwell Tarly in HBO's Game of Thrones.
Bradley takes on the character of Aubrey Flint, a solitary figure with a distinct aversion to all things festive. Unlike the Victorian miser Ebenezer Scrooge, Flint's contemporary humbug stems from a desire to avoid people altogether. His quiet life is disrupted after an unfortunate incident involving a snow globe and a mobility scooter, leading to a court-mandated community service assignment.
This forces Flint into a retirement home managed by Ellen, played by Sophia Di Martino, known for her role as Sylvie in Loki. The home faces imminent closure, but Ellen devises a plan: to transform the facility into a recognized community theater space by staging a play featuring the residents. Naturally, the chosen production is Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol, with a reluctant Aubrey Flint finding himself in the director's chair. The narrative will follow whether Flint can embrace the spirit of the season and help save the home, or if his Scroogelike tendencies will prevail.
The film boasts an impressive supporting cast alongside Bradley and Di Martino. Veteran actors Celia Imrie (The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel) and Richard E. Grant (Withnail and I) lend their talents, as do Adjoa Andoh (Bridgerton) and Kiell Smith-Bynoe (Ghosts UK). Adding a distinctive touch, Oscar-winner Jim Broadbent provides the voice of Charles Dickens.
Behind the camera, Jack Spring directs Merry Christmas Aubrey Flint, following his previous work on films like Three Day Millionaire. The screenplay is penned by Chris Boyle-McQuarry, who also appears in the film. Executive producers include Damian Jones (Goodbye Christopher Robin) and Paul Grindey (The Father), with Andy Brunskill (Everything Now) serving as producer.
Samuel Goldwyn Films is set to release Merry Christmas Aubrey Flint in theaters on November 6, just in time to usher in the festive viewing season.
