Jennifer Lawrence, who brought a new dimension to Mystique across four X-Men films, has revealed that the demanding nature of the character's transformation is a significant deterrent to reprising the role. Speaking to Allure magazine, Lawrence candidly shared her mixed feelings about her time as the blue-skinned mutant.

While she thoroughly enjoyed the physical aspects of the role, stating, "What I loved most about playing Mystique was the stunts. It was so much fun to train like that and learn how to move," her enthusiasm waned considerably when it came to the extensive makeup application. "What I liked least was definitely the makeup. So, never say never, but certainly not," she remarked, elaborating on the discomfort. "You know how cold the airbrush is? And I'm ticklish. I also learned how much I can function on very little sleep and what can happen to the human mind when you reach your limits. And patience!"

Lawrence first donned the blue skin in 2011's X-Men: First Class, portraying a younger version of the character originally played by Rebecca Romijn. She continued in the role through X-Men: Days of Future Past, X-Men: Apocalypse, and ultimately 2019's Dark Phoenix, which marked the end of the Fox X-Men saga before the Disney acquisition.

As Marvel Studios begins to integrate mutants into the sprawling Marvel Cinematic Universe, fans have seen glimpses of past X-Men iterations. Patrick Stewart's Professor X made a memorable appearance in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, and Kelsey Grammer's Beast briefly popped up in The Marvels. The upcoming Avengers Doomsday is set to feature several returning X-Men from the 2000s cast, alongside new and existing Avengers and the Fantastic Four.

However, it's the 2010s X-Men cast—including James McAvoy as Professor X, Michael Fassbender as Magneto, Nicholas Hoult as Beast, and Jennifer Lawrence as Mystique—who appear to be largely absent from this initial MCU integration. For Avengers Doomsday, the role of Mystique will indeed be reprised, but by Rebecca Romijn, who originated the character in the early 2000s films and had a cameo in First Class. The film is slated for a December 16th release.

Meanwhile, Jennifer Lawrence is moving forward with a diverse slate of projects, including What Happens at Night, a new film from acclaimed director Martin Scorsese, and Zach Cregger's sci-fi feature The Flood. Her focus clearly lies beyond the world of superhero blockbusters, at least for now, as she continues to carve out a career in varied roles.
