Known for pushing the boundaries of cinematic immersion with blockbusters like the Avatar franchise and recent projects such as the Billie Eilish concert documentary, Cameron's Lightstorm Vision is making significant strides in the technological landscape of filmmaking. The acquisition of Outsyders marks a pivotal moment, integrating the company's advanced AI tools and expertise directly into Lightstorm's operations.
Outsyders, founded in 2024 by Paul Becker, Jared Sandrew, and Chris Harvey, brings a strong track record to the table. Their work includes contributions to Imax’s Blue Angels and Disney’s animated features Lilo & Stitch and Moana. Crucially, Outsyders also collaborated directly with Cameron on Paramount’s Billie Eilish – Hit Me Hard and Soft: The Tour (Live in 3D), demonstrating a pre-existing synergy that likely paved the way for this deal.
Cameron himself lauded the collaboration, stating, “At Lightstorm we’ve been working with Paul Becker and his team for almost two years, and really enjoyed the collaboration.” He added, with his characteristic attention to detail, that Outsyders' “work and their AI tools are world class.” The director emphasized the combined entity's goal: “Together we will provide end-to-end solutions for productions and for studios, as we merge the worlds of conversion and native photographic 3D.”
Paul Becker, CEO and co-founder of Outsyders, echoed Cameron's enthusiasm. “We’ve always shared Jim’s vision for stereo,” Becker commented, highlighting the natural alignment between the two companies. He noted that their prior work with Cameron solidified the decision, confirming that their “combined technologies were the most logical and effective step for the format.”
The overarching objective of this merger is to drastically reduce the time, cost, and complexity associated with shooting and producing 3D content. Beyond new productions, Lightstorm Vision sees a massive untapped opportunity in converting existing film and television libraries into 3D. This vision aligns perfectly with Cameron's previous ventures, including a 2024 deal with Meta to create content for its Meta Quest VR headsets. The ability to economically transform vast archives into immersive 3D experiences could unlock a new revenue stream and content frontier for studios.
This latest acquisition follows Lightstorm's earlier move this year to acquire Stereotec, a leading 3D camera company. By integrating both camera technology and advanced post-production AI, Lightstorm Vision is strategically positioning itself as a dominant force in the future of 3D media, poised to make the format more accessible and efficient for the entire industry.
