IndieWire, a leading voice in independent film journalism, is set to present its inaugural Future of Filmmaking Award to Curry Barker, a director who has rapidly become one of Hollywood's most sought-after talents. The award will be a highlight of the Future of Filmmaking Summit, an all-day event celebrating innovation in storytelling, taking place on October 17 at Penske Media’s headquarters in Lumen West LA.

Barker's meteoric rise is largely attributed to his 2026 film, "Obsession." The horror thriller, which Barker not only directed but also wrote and edited, first captivated audiences at the 2025 Toronto International Film Festival. It quickly garnered critical acclaim, including an IndieWire Critic's Pick, before securing a highly competitive distribution deal with Focus Features.

"Obsession" went on to dominate the box office, grossing over $500 million worldwide. This monumental success made it the highest-grossing film in Focus Features' history, the sixth-highest-grossing horror film of all time, and notably, the most profitable original film of the 2020s. The film's commercial and critical triumph cemented Barker's reputation as a filmmaker with a unique vision and undeniable commercial appeal, positioning him as a key figure shaping the future of cinema.

Looking ahead, Barker is already embarking on his next ambitious project, "Anything But Ghosts." For this feature, he is once again collaborating with Focus Features and joining forces with Blumhouse Atomic Monster, a powerhouse in the horror genre. Barker is set to direct, edit, and star in the film, which he co-wrote with his long-time creative partner, Cooper Tomlinson. Tomlinson will also star, alongside an impressive cast that includes Aaron Paul, Bryce Dallas Howard, and Violet McGraw. This follow-up project signals Barker's continued trajectory as a multi-hyphenate talent.
