During a recent carpet interview, Navarrette was directly asked by a Canadian news program reporter to tease Rogue's famous Southern drawl, specifically her classic line, "Sugar!" With a smile, Navarrette admitted, "God bless me, I haven’t done a lot of practice. But, ah! I mean, my version’s just, ‘Sugar!'" She quickly followed up by assuring fans and the Marvel team that she is committed to refining it. "I’m gonna work on it, if you don’t like it, and I’m gonna figure out and talk to the Marvel team on what we wanna do."
Navarrette's casting as Rogue was officially announced at D23 earlier this year, marking a significant step for the character into the Marvel Cinematic Universe reboot. In the Marvel Comics, Rogue, whose real name is Anna Marie, hails from Mississippi, an origin that firmly establishes her Southern identity. Her powers famously include the ability to temporarily absorb the powers and memories of others through touch.
Speaking on The Hollywood Reporter's Awards Chatter podcast, Navarrette expressed her excitement and respect for taking on such a beloved character. She noted, "I also recognize that with acting comes the freedom of being a completely different person, one of those people being Rogue, Anna Marie… paying homage, paying respect to the incredible writers that are a part of Marvel, with Jake Schreier directing, taking what they want to do, adding my own sauce, and then going from there!" Her comments highlight a thoughtful approach to balancing comic book authenticity with her own creative interpretation.
The new X-Men film is directed by Jake Schreier and boasts an impressive ensemble cast alongside Navarrette, including Sadie Sink as Jean Grey, Kit Connor as Cyclops, Christopher Abbott as Professor X, Samara Weaving as Emma Frost, Maya Boyd as Storm, Asa Germann as Angel, and Adam Driver as Mr. Sinister. The movie is slated for release on May 5, 2028.
Beyond her Marvel commitments, Navarrette is also set to star in and executive produce Apple Original Films’ sci-fi thriller The Waffle House Index, further solidifying her growing presence in Hollywood.
