Sony Pictures has announced a new release date for its Helldivers movie, pushing it from November 10, 2027, to June 9, 2028, in the United States. This delay is attributed to the studio's decision to prioritize another tentpole project, Ridley Scott's Treasure Island starring Hugh Jackman, for the lucrative Veterans Day weekend on November 11, 2027. The holiday slot is expected to provide a stronger opening for the literary adaptation.

Helldivers, based on the successful video game known for its satirical sci-fi premise reminiscent of Starship Troopers, has been a project of interest for many fans. The game's sequel, Helldivers 2, sold over 12 million copies in just four months, underscoring the franchise's commercial appeal. The film adaptation boasts Justin Lin (Fast & Furious franchise) in the director's chair, with Alan Ritchson set to star in the lead role and Gary Dauberman handling the screenplay.

While the new summer release window in June 2028 typically bodes well for action-packed blockbusters, it also comes with increased competition. Helldivers is now slated to open on the same weekend as Universal's The Mandela Catalogue. More significantly, it will arrive just three weeks before another massive video game adaptation: Peter Berg's Call of Duty film, penned by Taylor Sheridan, which is currently scheduled for June 30, 2028.

The proximity to Call of Duty presents a considerable challenge for Helldivers. The Call of Duty video game franchise boasts over 500 million units sold worldwide, giving its cinematic counterpart a built-in audience and immense brand recognition. While Helldivers has a dedicated fanbase, it remains to be seen if its three-week head start will be enough to carve out a significant presence at the box office before the arrival of such a colossal competitor. Film enthusiasts and gamers alike will be watching closely to see how this summer showdown unfolds.
