The much-anticipated merger between Paramount and Warner Bros. Discovery has brought with it questions regarding leadership across various divisions. However, sources close to the matter, as reported by Deadline, indicate that DC Studios co-CEOs James Gunn and Peter Safran have secured their positions, ensuring continuity for the DC Universe (DCU) they are meticulously building.

The duo recently held a productive meeting with Skydance co-CEO David Ellison, a key figure in the new corporate structure, which reportedly went very well. This outcome is a crucial vote of confidence in Gunn's creative vision and Safran's production prowess, which have been instrumental in charting a new course for DC's storied characters.

Under the new arrangement, all film units, including Paramount and Warner Bros., will report to Paramount Pictures co-chairs Dana Goldberg and Josh Greenstein. While the future of Warner Bros. motion picture chairs Michael De Luca and Pamela Abdy remains under discussion with Ellison, Gunn and Safran's roles at DC Studios are solidified.

Since their appointment in October 2022, Gunn and Safran have been tasked with revitalizing the DC brand, mirroring the successful, unified creative strategy seen with Disney's Marvel Studios. This approach sees a filmmaker, Gunn, taking on the dual role of studio executive, a rare move in the industry.

The DC Studios slate is already taking shape under their guidance. James Gunn is currently in production on Superman, slated for a July 9, 2027 release, which is expected to be a cornerstone of the new DCU. Other anticipated projects include Clayface, a lower-budget genre film focusing on the Batman antagonist, set to open on October 23, and Matt Reeves' The Batman Part II, arriving February 18, 2028.

On the television front, the DC-HBO Max series Lanterns has emerged as a significant success. Co-created by Tom King, Damon Lindelof, and Chris Mundy, the series garnered an impressive 10 million global viewers for its third episode within its first three days, with its pilot accumulating over 20 million worldwide viewers since its August 16 premiere. This robust performance positions Lanterns as one of HBO Max's top titles, offering a promising outlook for DC's streaming endeavors.

While some recent projects, like last summer's Supergirl, have seen modest box office returns, Safran's past track record includes a string of hits such as the multi-billion-dollar The Conjuring franchise, as well as DC titles like Shazam! and Aquaman. He also produced Gunn's critically acclaimed 2021 film The Suicide Squad and its popular HBO Max spinoff series Peacemaker.

The confirmation of Gunn and Safran's continued leadership provides much-needed stability and a clear direction for DC Studios as it navigates the complexities of a major corporate merger, allowing them to press forward with their ambitious plans for the DC Universe.
