Québec's cinematic landscape continues to make its mark internationally, and 'Rédemptions' is a prime example. This powerful thriller, which blends intense violence with profound human solidarity, quickly became a sensation in Canada, surpassing the million-dollar mark at the Québec box office. Now, nearly five months after its initial release, the film is poised to reach French viewers, a significant milestone for director Luc Picard.
Picard, whose sixth feature film 'Rédemptions' marks his first foray into international distribution, expressed his enthusiasm to Qub Radio, stating, "It's the first time this has happened to me. [...] If we want our films to shine, to have a longer life, it's important to go to other markets." His dual role as director and lead actor, Marcel Tremblay, places him at the heart of this poignant drama.
Marcel Tremblay is introduced as a former hitman, ten years removed from prison and seemingly retired. However, circumstances force him back into his dangerous past. To clear a debt owed to a mob associate, Marcel coldly executes two men in a Montréal restaurant amidst a snowstorm. This double murder sets off a chain of events that profoundly impacts numerous individuals, from the restaurant's patrons to Marcel's estranged daughter, Marie (played by Kelly Depeault), who lives in Paris.
At its core, 'Rédemptions' delves into themes of love and compassion, particularly the unexpected connections forged in the face of adversity. Luc Picard elaborated on this to TVA Nouvelles, sharing, "There is one thing that moves me in life, it's when two people who don't know each other, who are strangers to each other, faced with a small or great violence, will show solidarity. I find that this is something that is true, that exists."
Adding a layer of star power to this ensemble is acclaimed French actor Gérard Lanvin, known for his roles in films like 'Marche à l'ombre' and 'Camping.' Lanvin portrays a French actor involved in a film shoot in Paris, whose path intertwines with Marie's boyfriend (played by Luc Picard's son, Henri Picard). Despite his role being a supporting one, Lanvin's presence is notably highlighted in the film's trailer, where he advises Henri Picard's character, "You save your life, you save your skin."
Lanvin, a César winner for 'Le Goût des autres,' spoke to CinéStarNews about his decision to join the project: "Luc Picard is a director I greatly respect. I respond to calls when they seem sincere, happy and interesting, and propose roles that are worth traveling for." His involvement underscores the film's artistic merit and its appeal to seasoned actors.
'Rédemptions' was also showcased at the Festival du film francophone d’Angoulême, further solidifying its critical reception. As the film prepares for its French theatrical release, it promises to deliver a powerful and emotionally resonant cinematic experience, inviting audiences to reflect on the nature of violence, debt, and the profound bonds of human connection.
