Speaking on CBS Sunday Morning, as reported by Ecran Large, Lucas candidly discussed the pivotal moment 14 years ago when he relinquished control of his beloved franchise for over $4 billion. For years, fans have speculated about the unmade sequel trilogy Lucas had envisioned, and he confirmed that these plans were well underway at the time of the sale.

"When I embarked on this project, I decided to retire from the world of cinema," Lucas stated, referring to the museum. He added, "It was a big decision, because I had three Star Wars films left to make. But I realized time was running out for me, and I really wanted to create this museum."

This isn't the first time Lucas has touched upon these abandoned films. In a 2020 interview with The Playlist, he mentioned, "At the time, I was starting to work on the next trilogy. I had talked with the actors and was starting to get things in order." However, the immense undertaking of building the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art, coupled with a desire to step back from the demanding world of blockbuster filmmaking, ultimately led him to sell.

The decision, though financially lucrative, was far from easy. Lucas has previously described it as "very, very painful." Following the acquisition, Disney opted to largely set aside Lucas's story treatments for the sequel trilogy, charting their own course with Star Wars: The Force Awakens and its successors.

Beyond his creative vision for Star Wars, Lucas also emphasized his significant contributions to film technology, particularly in digital innovation. He noted that he spent considerable time developing digital tools for the industry, viewing technology as fundamental to art. This passion for the intersection of art and technology is a cornerstone of his new museum.

At 82 years old, Lucas also hinted at the practical limitations on his future endeavors, stating, "Well, I'm 82, so there are limits…" While he may not be helming new Star Wars projects, the franchise continues to expand under Disney, with films like Shawn Levy's Star Wars: Starfighter slated for release on May 26, 2027. Lucas's recent reflections offer a poignant look at the personal sacrifices and ambitious dreams that shaped one of cinema's most iconic creators.
