Fans eager for the continuation of Matt Reeves' gritty take on the Caped Crusader will have to wait a little longer. According to a report by Deadline, The Batman 2 has halted production, as director Matt Reeves has temporarily suspended his involvement to focus on a personal family issue.
Warner Bros. and DC Studios released a statement confirming the situation, expressing their complete backing for the director: "The production of The Batman 2 is temporarily suspended while Matt Reeves focuses on a family matter. Matt has the full support of DC Studios, and we look forward to resuming the project soon." This move reassures fans that Reeves remains firmly at the helm and is not being replaced.
The sequel, which began filming in London last June, has faced a somewhat winding path to production, with previous reports of uncertainty regarding its priority amidst the nascent DCU. While the current pause adds another layer of anticipation, sources indicate it's too early to tell if this will impact the film's scheduled US release date of February 18, 2028. The situation, while different in context, has drawn comparisons to Zack Snyder's departure from Justice League due to family reasons, though fans will hope for a swift and positive resolution for Reeves.
When production eventually resumes, Robert Pattinson is set to return as Bruce Wayne/Batman. He will be joined by familiar faces such as Andy Serkis reprising his role as Alfred Pennyworth and Colin Farrell as Oswald Cobblepot, aka The Penguin. The cast is also set to expand with notable additions, including Scarlett Johansson, Sebastian Stan, Brian Tyree Henry, Jayme Lawson, Charles Dance, Gil Perez-Abraham, and Sebastian Koch.
The Batman 2 continues to operate within its own distinct universe, separate from James Gunn and Peter Safran's overarching DC Universe. The DCU is concurrently developing its own Batman film, The Brave and the Bold, set to be directed by Andy Muschietti, further solidifying the "Elseworlds" nature of Reeves' vision.
