Moviegoers in the heart of America's most fervent sports region, South Bend, Indiana, can look forward to a fresh festival experience this October. From the 22nd to the 25th, the inaugural Dynasty Sports Film Festival (DSFF) will unfold, celebrating the powerful intersection of sports and storytelling on screen. Backed by Shade Studios, the event promises to be a vibrant hub for filmmakers, athletes, and fans alike.
"The inaugural Dynasty Sports Film Festival will transform South Bend into a film and media sports capital," stated DSFF founders Marissa Hill and Alfred Castaneda of Shade Studios. Their vision is to create a new gathering place that honors "the stories that shape sports culture" while fostering dialogue between creators and athletes.
Attendees can expect a diverse program spanning six competitive categories, including narrative features, documentary features, short films, brand films, student films, and digital creator content. The festival will also feature an array of out-of-competition screenings and special events.
The four-day schedule is packed with notable highlights. Opening night on October 22 will feature the world premiere of "Lou Holtz: 60 Minutes to Play and a Lifetime to Remember," a documentary chronicling the life of the legendary Notre Dame coach. Following the screening, director Ted Mandell will participate in a Q&A session moderated by ESPN's Hannah Storm. The evening, supported by sponsors like B&H Creators, Sony, Profoto, and Lexar, culminates with a party at the Studebaker Museum.
Day two, October 23, brings a sneak-peek screening of the first episode of Prime Video's highly anticipated drama series, "The Greatest," which delves into the life of boxing icon Muhammad Ali. The series boasts an impressive creative team, including executive producers Ben Watkins and Michael B. Jordan. Also on the agenda is a screening of the ESPN documentary "The Brittney Griner Story," focusing on the WNBA star's journey.
October 24 offers a nostalgic treat with a special 40th Anniversary screening of a director's cut of "Hoosiers." This iconic basketball film will be followed by a Q&A with director David Anspaugh and screenwriter Angelo Pizzo, who also serves on the DSFF jury. Further programming that day includes "First Five," a documentary about legendary coach Bob Knight's initial recruiting class at Indiana University, featuring a Q&A with NBA player and doc subject John Laskowski. Tennis fans will appreciate the ESPN documentary "Give Me the Ball!", which highlights legends Billie Jean King, Chris Evert, Serena Williams, and even features Elton John.
The festival concludes on October 25 with family-friendly programming, including a 20th Anniversary screening of Pixar's beloved animated film "Cars."
Beyond the screenings, the DSFF will host gala events, anniversary celebrations, and insightful conversations with athletes and creators, ensuring a comprehensive experience for all who attend. The festival's jury comprises respected figures from film, media, and sports, including Angelo Pizzo, NFL Agent Eugene Lee, Professor Deirdre Boyle, Penn State's Maura Shea, YouTube's Fede Goldenberg, Critics Choice Board member Wilson Morales, Indiana University's Dr. Galen Clavio, and Notre Dame's Ted Mandell.
