Popcorn Wire has learned from industry reports that Disney+ Japan is preparing to unleash a chilling new original series, Night Tales Club, in January 2027. This six-part supernatural thriller promises to delve into the inexplicable, offering a fresh take on the horror genre for audiences worldwide.
The series centers on Hojo, a highly successful businessman with an unusual fixation: solving life's most profound mysteries and uncovering the truth behind supernatural phenomena. Hojo is convinced that ghost stories, monsters, and other bizarre anomalies are not mere folklore but rather "bugs" in a grand, underlying conspiracy. To gather evidence and personal accounts, he establishes the enigmatic Night Tales Club, inviting individuals to share their strange experiences in exchange for a hefty reward of 20 million yen. His investigations, however, invariably lead to the unleashing of terrifying horrors.
Takayuki Yamada, known for his versatile performances, has been cast in the pivotal role of Hojo, the charismatic yet unsettling storyteller at the heart of the club. The series boasts an impressive directorial lineup, with each episode helmed by a different acclaimed director. This includes masters of the genre like Kiyoshi Kurosawa (Cure) and Takashi Shimizu (Ju-On), alongside talents such as Shinzo Katayama (Gannibal), Yukiko Sode (Aristocrats), Yuichiro Sakashita (I Can’t Cry With Your Face), and Yosuke Nakamura (Higuma!!). Kenji Nakajima (The Naked Director) will be responsible for directing the sequences featuring Hojo.
Night Tales Club is an adaptation of a collection of short horror stories by Ichi Sawamura, who also takes on the role of screen adapter for the series. Sawamura expressed his excitement about the project, stating, "As the original author of these stories, I feel an enormous sense of surprise and joy that they will soon be available on screen to scare audiences around the world." The series is produced by Yusuke Wakabayashi and Teruhisa Yamamoto.
The announcement comes as Disney+ continues to bolster its original content offerings from Japan. The platform has previously launched successful Japanese originals such as the unsettling rural thriller Gannibal and the mystery-laden Land of Tanabata, alongside lighter fare like the rom-com Merry Berry Love. A teaser trailer for Night Tales Club has already been released, giving viewers a glimpse into the dark and intriguing world Hojo is set to explore.
