Ryan DeForeest, an emerging talent in filmmaking, has officially signed with Fusion Entertainment, a move that immediately greenlights the development of a feature film based on his impactful short, "My Brother & Me."
The original short, which premiered at the 2024 American Black Film Festival, tells the poignant story of two brothers, Malik and Terrence, navigating three decades of life from South Los Angeles to Oakland. Under the shadow of their father, Allen, the older brother, Malik, endures the brunt of his father's violence, while Terrence, who is gay, grapples with feeling invisible. Their bond, often the only constant in their lives, faces its own trials as they grow into men.
The short film has garnered significant attention and accolades since its debut, screening at prestigious events such as the Micheaux Film Festival, the Oak Park Black Film Festival, and NewFilmmakers Los Angeles. It earned a nomination for outstanding short form (live action) at the 56th NAACP Image Awards and secured two 2026 Best of NFMLA Awards nominations for best short film (drama) and best cinematography.
Chris Evans, co-founder of Fusion Entertainment, expressed his enthusiasm for the new partnership. "Ryan is a rare new voice whose filmmaking belongs right alongside our roster of distinctive auteurs with an unmistakable point of view," stated Evans. He highlighted the short's powerful themes, which delve into Black fatherhood, masculinity, queerness, and the intricate bonds of brotherhood.
DeForeest himself shared his personal connection to the project and his excitement for its expansion. "‘My Brother & Me’ started as a personal story made with some of my favorite people," he reflected. He added, "Having the opportunity to expand it into my first feature is something I never could have imagined."
For the feature adaptation, Chris Evans and Adam Kersh will produce on behalf of Fusion Entertainment. They will be joined by Lexx Truss, who previously produced the short film alongside Shandrea Evans. Key crew members from the original short, cinematographer Sade Ndya and composer Evan Wright, are also set to return, ensuring continuity in the film's visual and auditory storytelling.
The feature is currently in its development phase, with details regarding casting and an updated title expected to be announced at a later date.
