The first season of Ahsoka left its core characters in a precarious and intriguing position. Ahsoka Tano (Rosario Dawson), Sabine Wren (Natasha Liu Bordizzo), and Ezra Bridger (Eman Esfandi) found themselves stranded on Peridea, a distant planet in another galaxy. Accompanying them, albeit on a separate path, were the dark side users Shin Hati (Ivanna Sakhno) and the formidable Baylan Skoll, originally portrayed by the late Ray Stevenson. The season finale saw Baylan discovering statues of the Mortis gods, ancient and powerful entities of the Force, setting the stage for a profound expansion of Star Wars lore.

While the return of Grand Admiral Thrawn and the ongoing political machinations will undoubtedly play a role, Filoni's comments suggest a significant shift towards the more spiritual and philosophical aspects of the Force. Speaking to Empire magazine, Filoni indicated that the Mortis gods will be central to Ahsoka Season 2, promising a narrative that challenges characters and viewers alike.

"It's undeniably a subject," Filoni told Empire, referring to the Mortis gods. "The question that will arise is: are you going to believe it or not? And what is the danger if it's real? How are you going to prioritize your goals in this context? What would a Jedi do, and by contrast, what would an ordinary person do? These questions are addressed throughout the season. It's a challenge, I can assure you."

For those unfamiliar, the Mortis gods – the Father, the Son, and the Daughter – embody the balance of the Force, representing equilibrium, the dark side, and the light side, respectively. Their story, explored in Star Wars: The Clone Wars, saw Anakin Skywalker confronted with his destiny as the Chosen One. Filoni, who co-created Rebels and was a key figure in The Clone Wars, is now bringing these profound mythological concepts into live-action, much like he did with the 'World Between Worlds' from Rebels.

Filoni also addressed the necessity of prior viewing, stating that a rewatch of The Clone Wars Mortis arc, while recommended for its quality, won't be strictly necessary to understand Season 2. However, the themes of power and its use will be deeply explored. "The creation of these archetypal divine characters by George Lucas was so surprising. What were we looking to explore in The Clone Wars? What was the metaphor? It's largely a question of power, of what one does with power and how one uses it. For a Jedi, I think it's quite natural in their journey that they are led to ask themselves these questions."

It appears Baylan Skoll's quest on Peridea is directly tied to harnessing the power of these deities, a mission that could reshape the entire galaxy. Following the tragic passing of Ray Stevenson, the role of Baylan Skoll will now be taken on by Rory McCann, known for his role as The Hound in Game of Thrones.

Ahsoka Season 2 is currently anticipated to arrive on Disney+ in 2027, promising a continuation that pushes the boundaries of Star Wars storytelling into uncharted, mystical territory.
