Fans of 90s animation have reason to rejoice as Disney+ greenlights a new Darkwing Duck animated series. The original show, known in France as Myster Mask, captivated audiences from 1991 to 1992 with its unique blend of superhero parody and family-friendly adventure, centering on the titular crime-fighting duck, Drake Mallard.

The upcoming revival, officially titled Darkwing Duck in its original version, is set to pick up decades after the original's conclusion. The premise finds Drake Mallard, aka Darkwing Duck, having been trapped for 35 years in a parallel dimension where his heroic deeds have largely been forgotten. His chance at a comeback arrives courtesy of a rebellious teenager named Duckie, who not only remembers his legacy but inspires him to don his iconic purple suit once more. Together, they will face both new threats and familiar adversaries, including the notorious Negaduck (referred to as Sinister Mask in the source) and Megavolt.

Adding an intriguing twist, the series will also delve into a multiverse narrative, with Darkwing reuniting with his loyal sidekick Launchpad McQuack and his adopted daughter, Gosalyn Mallard, to confront the challenges posed by alternate realities.

The new series boasts an impressive voice cast, with some iconic roles being passed to a new generation of talent. Legendary voice actor Mark Hamill, celebrated for his portrayal of the Joker in Batman: The Animated Series, will take over the role of Darkwing Duck, previously voiced by Jim Cummings. Seth Rogen is set to lend his voice to the lovable Launchpad McQuack, a character originally voiced by Terence McGovern. Lizzy Caplan will step into the role of Gosalyn Mallard, while Lilimar, a Venezuelan actress, will voice the new character, Duckie.

Further expanding the ensemble, the series will introduce a new generation of characters voiced by a talented roster including Dan Stevens, Tiffany Shepis, Kathryn Newton, Teo Briones, Tyler Dean Flores, Katie Rich, and Nat Faxon.

Behind the scenes, the series is being penned by Sean Tretta, known for his work on Star Trek: Picard and Mayans M.C., alongside Borja Peña Gorostegui of Lost & Crowned fame. Crucially, Tad Stones, the creator of the original Darkwing Duck, will return as a consultant, ensuring the revival stays true to the spirit of the beloved classic. While excitement builds for this long-awaited return, Disney+ has yet to announce an official release date for the series.
