Sony Pictures has unveiled the first look at Prima Facie, a compelling cinematic adaptation that places Cynthia Erivo in the challenging role of Tessa, a sharp and successful barrister. Tessa has built a formidable career defending men accused of sexual assault, navigating the complexities of the law with an unwavering belief in the system she serves.

However, Tessa's world is irrevocably shattered when she herself becomes a victim of sexual assault within her own legal circles. This devastating personal experience forces her to confront the very judicial system she once championed, but now from the harrowing perspective of an accuser. The film delves deep into the psychological and professional unraveling that ensues, as Tessa's faith in justice is shaken to its core.

The feature film, directed by Susanna White, known for her work on The Buccaneer and Andor, had its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF). It draws its powerful narrative from Suzie Miller's celebrated one-woman play, Prima Facie, which captivated theater audiences and critics alike. The stage production achieved significant acclaim, earning Olivier Awards in the West End, including Best Actress for Jodie Comer, who later secured a Tony Award for her Broadway performance.

Cynthia Erivo, known for her roles in Harriet and the upcoming Wicked films, expressed her connection to the material. As she told Deadline at TIFF, she was drawn to the script's nuanced approach to morality: “I loved the grey area that it dealt with.” Erivo emphasized the complexity of her character, Tessa, noting, “That she wasn’t a straightforward human being... The navigation of all that for me was a really interesting thing to have to play.” She embraced the role as a significant artistic challenge.

Prima Facie is slated for a theatrical release in the UK and Ireland on November 13. Details regarding its U.S. distribution are yet to be announced, with UTA Independent Film Group and CAA Media Finance co-representing sales.
