Cynthia Erivo, known for her powerful performances on stage and screen, has officially joined the cast of Universal Pictures’ highly anticipated biopic, Snoop. The film, which chronicles the life and career of legendary rapper Snoop Dogg, will feature Erivo in the significant role of Afeni Shakur, the mother of the late, iconic rapper Tupac Shakur.
Afeni Shakur was a complex and influential figure, a former Black Panther activist whose life and relationship with her son deeply impacted his music, most notably inspiring his heartfelt 1995 hit, “Dear Mama.” Erivo's casting in this key role, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter, brings a formidable talent to embody a woman central to the narrative of two of hip-hop's most enduring legends.
The biopic is currently in production across Southern California under the direction of Craig Brewer, who previously helmed Dolemite Is My Name. Brewer also penned the latest draft of the screenplay, building upon an initial script by Joe Robert Cole. The film promises to immerse audiences in Snoop Dogg's journey, integrating music from his extensive catalog.
Jonathan Daviss, recognized for his work in Netflix’s Outer Banks, is set to star as Snoop Dogg, charting his rise from Long Beach, California, to global superstardom. Alongside him, Camron Jones, from Amazon Prime’s Panic, will portray Tupac Shakur, capturing the influential yet often troubled rapper. Erivo's portrayal of Afeni Shakur will undoubtedly add depth and emotional weight to the intertwining stories of these musical titans.
The production team boasts industry veterans, with Brian Grazer of Imagine Entertainment — known for producing the Eminem drama 8 Mile — leading alongside Allan Mandelbaum. Snoop Dogg himself is also producing the film, an endeavor he shares with Death Row Pictures president Sara Ramaker.
Erivo, a Tony, Grammy, and Emmy winner, and a three-time Oscar nominee, continues to build an impressive filmography. Her recent work includes starring as Elphaba in the two-part Wicked movies for Universal, a performance that garnered her multiple award nominations. She is also slated to appear in the film adaptation of Prima Facie and Paramount’s Children of Blood and Bone, further cementing her status as one of Hollywood's most sought-after talents.
