Acclaimed singer and performer Charli XCX has been revealed as the latest addition to the cast of Martin Scorsese's 'What Happens at Night,' according to reports from Ecran Large, citing Variety. The news comes despite filming having concluded months ago, between February and May of last year, indicating that details about the film's full lineup are still emerging.
Charli XCX, primarily known for her chart-topping music career, has been steadily building her acting résumé since 2025. Her recent film credits include leading roles in 'Eruption' and 'The Moment,' as well as supporting parts in Romain Gavras's 'Sacrifice' and Gregg Araki's 'I Want Your Sex.' Her involvement in 'What Happens at Night' marks a notable step in her burgeoning cinematic journey, though her specific role in the film is currently undisclosed, speculated to be a cameo.
This isn't the first time the artist has crossed paths with the legendary director. Scorsese notably appeared on the cover of Charli XCX's 2026 album, Music, Fashion, Film. At the time, she expressed immense gratitude on Instagram, stating she was "honored" he agreed to pose for her and felt "lucky" to discuss cinema and film restoration with him, along with sharing his experience during the photoshoot.
'What Happens at Night' boasts a formidable cast, led by Academy Award winners Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence. This marks DiCaprio's seventh collaboration with Scorsese, continuing their prolific partnership. For Lawrence, who previously worked with DiCaprio on 'Don't Look Up' (a film Scorsese produced), this project signifies her first direct collaboration with the director. The ensemble also includes esteemed actors such as Patricia Clarkson, Mads Mikkelsen, Jared Harris, and Welker White.
The film is an adaptation of Peter Cameron's novel, 'What Happens at Night,' and is described as a gothic psychological thriller. The story follows an American couple, portrayed by DiCaprio and Lawrence, who travel to a desolate European city with the intention of adopting a baby. Their stay in a peculiar hotel, inhabited by a cast of enigmatic characters, leads them to gradually lose their grip on reality, delving into unsettling and supernatural territory.
With production complete, 'What Happens at Night' is expected to premiere in 2027. Film enthusiasts are hopeful for a high-profile debut, possibly at the Cannes Film Festival, following the successful reception of Scorsese's 'Killers of the Flower Moon' four years prior.
