The collaboration, reported by Deadline, marks one of the most substantial content agreements in recent UK television history. Kicking off early next year, Disney+ subscribers in the UK and Ireland will gain access to hundreds of hours of Channel 4's on-demand library. Crucially, new Channel 4 series will also premiere day-and-date on Disney+, ensuring immediate access to fresh content.
Among the popular titles heading to Disney+ are the gritty reality challenge Celebrity SAS: Who Dares Wins, and the highly anticipated drama Maya, starring Bella Ramsey. Viewers can also look forward to acclaimed shows like Russell T. Davies’ Tip Toe and Nicola Coughlan’s Big Mood joining the platform, significantly diversifying Disney+'s content offering.
For Disney+, this partnership aligns with a broader strategy of integrating local European content and fostering collaborations with public service broadcasters. Karl Holmes, Disney+ EMEA General Manager, emphasized the complementary nature of the audiences. He noted that Disney+ viewership skews younger, with approximately 40% of its audience aged 16-34 over the past year. "There is a genuinely complementary relationship here," Holmes stated. "We’re not competing with free-to-air partners; we’re helping them reach a broader audience."
Holmes also highlighted Disney+'s focus on acquiring impactful content. "One clear lesson is that a focus on shows that are current, big, bold and buzzy – and available day-and-date – works particularly well with our audience," he explained, indicating the strategic importance of this collaboration.
Channel 4 CEO Priya Dogra, who has been instrumental in orchestrating several major deals in her tenure, views this as a vital step in expanding the broadcaster's reach. Dogra believes the partnership will allow Channel 4 to connect with audiences who might not typically engage with its traditional services. "People develop viewing habits in different places, and we need to make sure Channel 4 is available on those platforms," she affirmed. This strategy complements Channel 4's existing licensing of Disney content, such as Abbott Elementary, for its own VOD player.
The deal follows Disney+'s successful content-swapping agreement with ITV, which saw shows like The Bear move to ITVX while Love Island went to Disney+. This new pact with Channel 4 is described as broader in scope, reflecting lessons learned from previous collaborations across Europe, including partnerships with Germany's ZDF and Spain's Atresmedia. For Channel 4, this latest agreement, alongside a recent landmark advertising deal with Paramount's UK network 5, reinforces its commitment to leveraging external partnerships to maximize impact and reach across the UK and Ireland. Further details on the content rollout are expected in the coming months.
