The upcoming 36th Annual Gotham Film Awards ceremony, scheduled for November 30 at Cipriani Wall Street in New York City, will shine a spotlight on the cinematic achievement of "Michael." Director Antoine Fuqua, actors Colman Domingo, Jaafar Jackson, and Nia Long, alongside producer Graham King, are among those slated to accept the honor. This recognition comes as the film continues its impressive run, having already become the highest-grossing biographical film of all time, with global box office receipts exceeding $1 billion.
Jeffrey Sharp, Executive Director of the Gotham Film and Media Institute, lauded the filmmakers' efforts. "For our second Gotham Musical Tribute, we are delighted to honor these incredibly talented actors and filmmakers for bringing Michael Jackson’s life, legend and music to the screen," Sharp stated. He added that "Their extraordinary work captures the humanity behind one of the world’s most celebrated artists."
"Michael" chronicles the extraordinary journey of Michael Jackson, from his early days with The Jackson Five to his unparalleled rise as one of the most influential and iconic musicians across the globe. The film delves into both his public persona and the complexities of his life away from the stage, offering a comprehensive look at the artist who redefined popular music.
The Gotham Musical Tribute, now in its second year, was inaugurated last year by Hugh Jackman and Kate Hudson for their work on "Song Sung Blue." This year's selection of "Michael" underscores the film's significant cultural impact and its success in bringing a musical legend's story to life on the big screen.
The film's ensemble cast also features Laura Harrier, Juliano Krue Valdi, and Miles Teller, bringing depth to the narrative. Penned by acclaimed screenwriter John Logan, the project was produced by Graham King, John Branca, and John McClain. The immense success of "Michael" has already prompted plans for a sequel, which is reportedly in active development, promising further exploration into Jackson's legacy.
The Gotham Awards ceremony will also honor other luminaries this year, including Danny Boyle with the Gotham Director Tribute for "Ink," "La Bola Negra" with the Gotham Vanguard Tribute, and Laika Studios with the Gotham Anniversary Tribute. Nominees for the competitive categories are expected to be announced on October 27.
