Bill Hader, known for his versatile comedic and dramatic roles, is taking on the titular role in the upcoming animated movie The Cat in the Hat, slated to hit theaters on November 6. This marks his second time embodying the beloved Dr. Seuss character, following a 2014 Saturday Night Live sketch that presented a decidedly more adult version.
Speaking at the film's Los Angeles premiere, Hader acknowledged the contrast. He told The Hollywood Reporter that his SNL take "was a much different version of Cat in the Hat" than this current family-focused adaptation. Hader also noted he hadn't drawn inspiration from Mike Myers' 2003 live-action rendition, admitting he has never actually seen it.
The film's writer-directors, Erica Rivinoja and Alessandro Carloni, expressed immense confidence in Hader's casting. Both having collaborated with him on previous projects, they highlighted his exceptional range. Rivinoja praised Hader, stating, "He’s the funniest, best voice actor ever. He’s also a really good emotional actor and was able to hit the heartfelt parts very well." Carloni echoed her sentiments, emphasizing Hader's ability to bring depth to the character beyond mere buffoonery, suggesting the Cat's antics might conceal a deeper understanding.
Despite the fun of voice acting, Hader confessed it's a demanding process. He humorously noted the exhaustion involved, quipping, "After every session I would need a nap because I’m just old."
The Cat in the Hat expands significantly beyond the original 1957 children's book. Rivinoja revealed that the book's plot forms only the initial minutes of the film, with the narrative exploring "where does the cat go after this is over." The movie boasts a star-studded voice cast alongside Hader, including Quinta Brunson, America Ferrera, Matt Berry, Bowen Yang, Xochitl Gomez, Giancarlo Esposito, and Tituss Burgess.
Quinta Brunson, who attended a screening with children, reflected on the film's primary audience. As a showrunner and writer, she's often focused on technical aspects, but witnessing the kids' enthusiastic reaction served as a "reminder that this is a movie for kids and families to have a good time."
