Popcorn Wire has learned that the first trailer for La Comtesse de Monte-Cristo made its debut on October 18, offering a glimpse into a lavish production that promises a captivating spin on a literary classic. While numerous adaptations of The Count of Monte Cristo have graced screens – including a successful 2024 film starring Pierre Niney and a 2025 mini-series featuring Sam Claflin – this new series distinguishes itself by shifting the narrative focus entirely.
Created by a team including Gaïa Guasti, Djibril Glissant, Clément Peny, and Florian Spitzer, with Glissant also directing, the series explores a pivotal “what if” scenario. As Glissant shared in an interview with Le Point at the La Rochelle Fiction Festival, the concept was inspired by Marvel’s alternate reality comics:
“When I was little, there were these Marvel comic books, titled 'What If,' which changed a parameter in the lives of heroes, to tell a completely different story. We said: what if, when Edmond is sent to prison, Mercédès didn’t just say 'okay,' but said 'no'?”
This crucial deviation sets the stage for Mercédès (Audrey Fleurot) to take center stage. Instead of passively awaiting Edmond Dantès' return, she actively attempts to save him from the infamous Château d’If. However, their escape bid ends in tragedy, with Edmond meeting his demise. Devastated yet fueled by a burning desire for revenge, Mercédès escapes the fortress, embarking on her own quest to avenge her husband’s death.
Audrey Fleurot, a prominent figure on French television, particularly known for her role in HPI, appears fully committed to her new vengeful persona. The trailer showcases her in various disguises, hinting at the depth and transformation her character undergoes. The series promises a visually impressive experience, featuring numerous natural settings and opulent 19th-century French backdrops, along with intense action sequences. While some visual choices, particularly the dream sequences with Abbé Faria, strike a daring chord, they certainly add a unique aesthetic.
The narrative is expected to largely follow the established beats of Dumas's original, with Mercédès systematically confronting those responsible for Edmond’s downfall. Intriguingly, one plot point hinted at in the trailer suggests an additional layer to her story, possibly involving childbirth. The series also teases a meta-narrative element, with Mercédès potentially seeking out Alexandre Dumas himself to immortalize her extraordinary tale.
Beyond Fleurot, the ensemble cast includes respected French actors such as Zabou Breitman, Kad Merad, Denis Lavant, Thierry Godard, Simon Ehrlacher, and Eric Elmosnino. While the first trailer has been released, La Comtesse de Monte-Cristo does not yet have a precise broadcast date on TF1 but is anticipated to arrive in early 2027.
