Moviegoers looking to catch Michael Showalter's latest thriller, Verity, on the big screen might find their options dwindling. The Anne Hathaway-led adaptation of Colleen Hoover's novel has seen 500 theaters drop it from their schedules in its third week. This move by distributor Amazon MGM comes after the film initially launched in over 3,500 locations across North America.
While a theater reduction is common for films as they progress through their release cycle, a drop of this size for a major studio release often signals a slowdown in commercial momentum. According to Collider, Verity's performance stands in contrast to last year's Digger, which saw an astonishing 2,700 theaters removed in its third week—one of the largest drops in cinematic history. Compared to that, Verity has demonstrated a more resilient, if not blockbuster, hold.
Financially, Verity has garnered approximately $115 million worldwide against a reported production budget of $40 million. This puts it in a profitable, albeit not stratospheric, position. However, its critical reception has been less enthusiastic, currently holding a 31% score on Rotten Tomatoes. This contrasts sharply with the massive success of another Colleen Hoover adaptation, It Ends with Us, which pulled in over $350 million globally in 2024, partly fueled by significant pre-release buzz and controversy.
Other recent Hoover adaptations, Regretting You and Reminders of Him, each grossed around $90 million worldwide, placing Verity's current haul ahead of them. When stacked against other thrillers aimed at similar audiences, Verity falls short of the $400 million achieved by the Sydney Sweeney-led The Housemaid in 2025 and the $175 million of Emily Blunt's The Girl on the Train a decade prior. It is, however, on track to surpass Anne Hathaway's own sci-fi film The End of Oak Street, which finished its run with $122 million.
For Anne Hathaway, 2026 has been a year of diverse projects and varied box office fortunes. While Verity navigates a challenging theatrical landscape, Hathaway also starred in two other major releases this year: The Odyssey and The Devil Wears Prada 2, which collectively amassed over $2.5 billion worldwide. This highlights that while Verity may not be her biggest hit, it's just one part of a busy and largely successful year for the acclaimed actress.
