Popcorn Wire has learned from Deadline that Amazon MGM Studios has secured the feature film adaptation of Butcher & Blackbird, a dark romance novel that captivated readers and became a viral sensation. The studio plans a worldwide release for the film on its Prime Video streaming service.
At the helm is director Chris McKay, who previously collaborated with Amazon on the sci-fi actioner The Tomorrow War. McKay's diverse directorial background also includes the critically acclaimed The Lego Batman Movie and the recent vampire comedy Renfield, demonstrating his versatility across genres. His involvement suggests a dynamic and visually distinct approach to this unconventional love story.
Taking on the pivotal lead roles are Emma Laird and Thomas Doherty. Laird, whose profile is rapidly ascending, has a packed slate including 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, Apple TV+'s Neuromancer, and the second season of HBO's War, for which she earned a BAFTA Scotland nomination. Doherty, a Scottish actor, is currently starring in Hulu's Paradise and is recognized for his roles in Gossip Girl and Tell Me Lies. Their casting brings a fresh and compelling dynamic to the complex characters at the heart of the story.
Butcher & Blackbird originates from Brynne Weaver's #1 New York Times bestselling novel, the first installment in her Ruinous Love trilogy. The book, published in October 2023, quickly became a phenomenon on BookTok and a bestseller across multiple platforms. Its premise revolves around two rival serial killers who exclusively target other serial killers. As they attempt to outwit and outmaneuver each other, an unexpected and deeper connection begins to form, forcing them to confront the possibility of a shared future.
The screenplay was penned by Laura Kosann, with subsequent revisions by Ari Berkowitz and Ava Tramer. Producing the film are Lyrical Media's Alexander Black and Embrace. Weaver and McKay will serve as executive producers alongside Lyrical Media's Arlen Konopaki, Jon Rosenberg, and Jonathan Faust.
This acquisition by Amazon MGM Studios highlights the increasing trend of adapting popular literary works, especially those with a strong online following, for streaming platforms. With its unique premise, established source material, and a talented team both in front of and behind the camera, Butcher & Blackbird is poised to be a significant addition to Prime Video's original content library.
